Most people assume the toilet is the dirtiest place in the home.
It looks dirty, it feels dirty, and it is something we consciously clean on a regular basis.

The washing machine, on the other hand, feels safe.
It cleans our clothes. It uses water and detergent. It runs automatically.
So it is easy to believe that it must be clean.

In reality, many household washing machines are far more contaminated than toilets, just in ways we don’t easily notice.

Why washing machines get dirty so easily

A washing machine is not a “clean” environment.
It is a warm, humid, closed system that regularly receives organic matter.

Every wash introduces:

  • Sweat, skin oils, and dead skin cells

  • Fabric fibers

  • Detergent residue

  • Water that does not fully drain or dry

Most households also wash at low temperatures, typically between 30–40°C.
This is good for energy saving and fabric care, but not effective for killing bacteria or mold.

Over time, these conditions allow microorganisms to accumulate and form biofilm inside the machine.

Why toilets are often cleaner than expected

This may sound counterintuitive, but toilets are usually cleaned more thoroughly and more often.

They are:

  • Flushed with large volumes of water

  • Frequently scrubbed with disinfectants

  • Visually monitored — dirt is obvious, so people react quickly

Toilet contamination is usually visible and temporary.

Washing machine contamination is different.
It develops slowly, inside parts you rarely see and almost never clean.

The parts most people never clean

The majority of contamination in washing machines is not on the drum you can see.

It builds up in places such as:

  • The space between the inner and outer drum

  • Rubber door seals where water collects

  • Detergent drawers and inlet channels

  • Drain hoses and filters

These areas stay damp for long periods and are difficult to rinse properly during normal wash cycles.

As a result, bacteria and mold can persist for years.

“My clothes smell even after washing”

Many people notice that:

  • Clothes smell musty immediately after washing

  • Odors return after drying

  • The washing machine itself smells unpleasant when opened

This is often not a detergent issue.

It is a sign that the washing machine is contaminating clean laundry, rather than the other way around.

Clean does not always mean hygienic

A common misconception is that if clothes look clean, the system must be clean.

In reality:

  • Low-temperature washing removes visible dirt but not microorganisms

  • Detergents are designed for fabric care, not machine sanitation

  • Regular laundry cycles do not clean internal machine structures

Without periodic maintenance, contamination accumulates quietly.

A simple but important conclusion

Toilets are cleaned because they feel dirty.
Washing machines are ignored because they feel clean.

That difference alone explains why washing machines are often in worse hygienic condition.

What most households should do

This does not require extreme measures or complicated routines.

A few basic habits make a meaningful difference:

  • Periodic deep cleaning of the washing machine

  • Allowing the drum and seals to dry after use

  • Avoiding excessive detergent use

  • Treating the washing machine as an appliance that needs maintenance, not a self-cleaning system
